5×5, Part 2: Collaborations

5x5, Part 2 - Collaborations

We already have songs covered, and doing favorite albums on Day 2 of a 5-part feature would be like Skynyrd playing “Sweet Home Alabama” at the beginning of the concert… so how’s about collaborations? Yeah? Let’s do it! Here are the 5 momentary musical marriages I enjoyed most in 2012.

ROSTAM

The Internet is chock-full of awfulness. It’s everywhere you turn. If you don’t believe me, simply scroll down after watching any YouTube video — seriously, ANY YouTube video — and you’ll encounter the very bottom of humanity’s communicative barrel. Just ask Josh Tillman, who recently sat down to respond to a few of the thoughts posted below a Father John Misty video (it’s worth watching — he kicks things off by aptly comparing YouTube comments to “shitting on your own face”).

But things aren’t all bad. There certainly are some Internet good guys out there, and I count Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij among their ranks.

Carly Rae JePSY

I have to admit that I haven’t been totally up front with you. Here I am, posting 3 or 4 times a week, talking about serious things like Apartheid-era South Africa and behavioral music therapy, yet what do I turn around and listen to on the weekends?

I’ve listened to a zillion remixes and mashups, smiled ear-to-ear while watching the Jimmy Fallon classroom instruments version, and I may or may not have bought a screen-printed “Call Me Maybe” shirt while in Chincoteague, VA a few weekends ago. Oh, and there are unconfirmed reports that I sang the chorus to the Eastern European cashier of a McDonald’s in Ocean City, MD this past weekend.

Whatever.

THE POINT IS that “Call Me Maybe” is an addiction I’ve yet to kick, and discovering the mashup below — which pairs the song with PSY’s “Gangnam Style” — is not going to help matters.

Radiohead

The King of Limbs

Concert Catch-Up Week, Day 3: Radiohead

I love picking music apart. Like some eager high school biology student with a scalpel in his hand and a dead frog lying belly-up on his desk (The album art above seems downright icky after reading that, doesn’t it?), I like dissecting songs, finding out what makes them tick, what makes them exceptional, and what they reveal about the people who wrote them. Actually, “like” might not be the right word to use; after years of playing in bands and nearly 250 posts on this here blog, this type of analytic thinking has become almost totally involuntary. I’ll sometimes catch myself coming up with angles for posts about even the dumbest pop music, like why that video of Jimmy Fallon and the Roots playing “Call Me Maybe” with Carly Rae Jepsen is actually pretty great, or how “Am I The Only One” by Dierks Bentley perfectly encapsulates the way relationships with your friends evolve during your mid-20’s (please someone dare me to actually write this).

With this propensity in mind, I had a quick chat with my brain as we hurried into the Verizon Center to catch the beginning of Radiohead’s June 3 performance. It went a little something like this…
