OK, so now what?
What should America do with K-pop now that the “Gangnam Style” flood waters are starting to recede? Do we explore the rest of PSY’s catalog, or do we act like the whole horsey dance thing never happened? Should we start checking out other K-pop artists, or should we go back to ignoring the genre’s steady, world-wide march? I think we can all agree to continue complaining about dubstep, but it’s going to be really interesting to see where the American market for K-pop goes from here.
I have to admit that I haven’t been totally up front with you. Here I am, posting 3 or 4 times a week, talking about serious things like Apartheid-era South Africa and behavioral music therapy, yet what do I turn around and listen to on the weekends?
Yup. “Call Me Maybe.”
I absolutely love “Call Me Maybe.” Have for a hot minute. I’ve listened to a zillion remixes and mashups, smiled ear-to-ear while watching the Jimmy Fallon classroom instruments version, and I may or may not have bought a screen-printed “Call Me Maybe” shirt while in Chincoteague, VA a few weekends ago. Oh, and there are unconfirmed reports that I sang the chorus to the Eastern European cashier of a McDonald’s in Ocean City, MD this past weekend.
THE POINT IS that “Call Me Maybe” is an addiction I’ve yet to kick, and discovering the mashup below — which pairs the song with PSY’s “Gangnam Style” — is not going to help matters.
Between the Olympics, the beach, and the Outer Banks’ miserable Internet situation, I had some serious blinders on last week. Some might say, “Well duh, that’s the point of going on vacation… getting away from it all.” Those people probably also say things like “This flip phone does me just fine,” and “Don’t forget to type the ‘www.'”
I feel pretty lucky though, because I came home to an overgrown inbox that was crawling with fun stuff waiting to be watched/heard. My homecoming email catch-up started off with a bang when I clicked on a link to the YouTube video above. Wow. Just… wow.
