I don’t normally take the fine wine approach to used records. If I buy something, I play it. As soon as possible. My self control is not, shall we say, the stuff of legend. But I’ve been keeping secret a Billie Holiday greatest hits album I picked up at Plan 9 a while back (my first Holiday record), and I’m planning to break it out tonight for maximum romantic effect. Alicia Silverstone told me he’s great, so I’m really looking forward to it.
Wish me luck, y’all. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Believe it or not, I had a “Music Appreciation” class in my last year of high school (even taught a couple of sessions) and I’ve never forgotten the clip our teacher showed us of Lester Young & Billie Holiday working on Fine & Mellow in the studio. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhdYoWhBKhM. HVD!
Oh my goodness, this is too beautiful. I love the way her face lights up as she’s watching the soloists. Certainly brings into focus how spot-on everyone had to be when recording live like that. Makes overdubbing seem downright silly!
Best of luck Davy, though I doubt you’ll need it. I’m still trying to find the words to thank you for your BK post.
Great tune. ‘I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me’ is well worth a look if you want to delve a little further into Holiday’s world.
