How’s about another Joe’s Pick? Yeah? Yeah!
It’s been a little more than two months since we first checked in with what my father-in-law has been listening to, and I couldn’t be more excited to bring you round 2.
This past weekend in PA was action-packed, and not just on the dairy consumption front. We also spent some quality time messing around with the tunes-related capabilities of Joe’s new Apple TV, which pulls in his entire library of mp3s, as well as the trove of radio stations that are accessible through iTunes. That’s right. Radio stations. iTunes. I had no idea.
OK, OK, so there’s a “Radio” tab right next to the “Playlists” tab that I use like every other day. I never claimed to be the most observant knife in the drawer. But there really is a fantastic selection of genre-sorted stations, some of which you may even recognize. Take WXPN, for example — the station we normally listen to while in PA. Right there under the “Eclectic” heading. So convenient. So awesome. (If you’re not familiar with their World Cafe program, I would suggest clicking here and jumping on the bandwagon as soon as humanly possible.) There were some unexpected gems as well, like Ambient Ambiance, which proved to be perfect background music for the post-holiday party they held on Saturday night.
I’m not sure whether it was one of those thousands of stations that originally brought Englishman Jake Bugg to my father-in-law’s attention, but we took a break from our radio research at one point to tune the Apple TV to Bugg’s song “Two Fingers,” which was released late last year on an EP by the same name. It’s an easy song to fall for, tightly constructed and catchy, with a clap-along beat and an understatedly anthemic chorus — “I hold two fingers up to yesterday” — that almost makes to want to have a bad day, so you can wake up the next morning and blast this song on the way to work.
Oh, and did I mention that the 18-year-old Bugg has performed on Later… with Jools Holland, was just featured on NPR Music and has been quoted as saying that “Bob Dylan’s cool, you know, he’s great, but he’s not a major influence.” How cool is that? Way cooler than I was at 18, that’s for sure. I dunno why, but I feel like, in some twisted way, Bob Dylan would probably love that quote.
