Had a great meta moment the first time I listened to “You Heard What You Wanted,” the second track from Dead Professional’s new Young Hardware EP.

This video blew my mind a little bit. “Anna” has always reminded me of something Mark Mothersbaugh would have written for The Life Aquatic (“Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue Op” might be what I’m thinking of), and the first few seconds of the video pick up on the film’s aesthetic, with the yellow credits set against the ocean’s surface, the interior shots of a boat that seems very clean and vaguely antiquated… Emma Stone’s (excellent) performance takes the Brantley Gutierrez-directed clip to a different place — more Spike Jonze than Wes Anderson — but it still feels like the association I’d silently made was somehow extracted from my brain and given a visual form. I love it.

I managed to sneak away for a few free-ranging hours at the Richmond Folk Festival on Saturday, and I brought my camera along with a photo post in mind.

I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Lindy Fralin recently. He plays around Richmond in a rockabilly outfit called The Bop Cats, and he’s known far and wide as one of the finest makers of aftermarket guitar pickups. (Check out this awesome mention in Guitar Player magazine.) The article won’t be out for a little while, but I’m celebrating earl by rocking 25 Years of Rock n’ Roll this week.

Still catching up after getting back from Florida. Mind if I squeeze in a belated CD Monday?
A few things about the Mountain Goats’ All Hail West Texas:

Team YHT is on a grandparent visit in Florida this weekend (I believe this is the first time anyone’s gone to Florida to ride out a hurricane), but I have a “What I would be doing” recommendation for all you wet and wild Richmond folks: Anything and everything Diamond Center.

While running along a barrier- and spectator-lined section of Monument Avenue, I found the perfect album to pair with UCI Road World Championship racing: Positive No’s Glossa.
My rationale:

I really liked “All Your Favorite Bands” when I first heard it, though I have to admit it felt a tad sentimental. Then I saw the video, at which point shit got real.
