So excited to have finally gotten my hands on a copy of the September/October issue of River City Magazine. Hopefully y’all already snagged a copy and saw the article I did with bassist Brian Cruse. If not, you can check it out here (UPDATED LINK). I really hope you will, because I can honestly say that the conversation that led to this article is among my favorite interview experiences.
This was an emphatic Baby YHT pick. She’s pulled Keep It Together off our CD rack about a dozen times, so you could say this CD Monday has been a long time coming. Maybe she knew that they’d be playing a show in Richmond on a Monday (tonight at the National) and has been trying to tell me the whole time! Maybe she just likes playing with CDs and making messes. I’ll be sure to ask her when I get home.
Like I said — lots going on tonight.
Extravagant happenings are brewing at the Broadberry, Strange Matter, and En Su Boca, as the Extragavanza is set to unleash more than a dozen bands before the night is over. Among those set to perform are DIIV, Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires, Wolf Eyes, No Joy, and Richmond standouts like The Trillions, Avers, and the Snowy Owls.

First, a heads up about Jonathan Edwards. I wrote a thing for Richmond Navigator about how the writer of “Sunshine (Go Away Today)” and other hits will be stopping at the Tin Pan tonight. Click here to read it — it’s half preview and half review of his new album, Tomorrow’s Child. I really like Tomorrow’s Child, and one thing I’ll mention here that I didn’t sufficiently explore in that piece is how gracefully honest the lyrics are.
I posted “Tuesday’s Gone” on election day back in 2012 and I’m thinking this needs to become a YHT tradition.
It took me approximately .0135 seconds to decide which CD I’d drive around with this week.
Picking up the thread from last week’s CD Monday. Frank Hoier’s was the first version I heard of the traditional song “Moonshiner,” which folds the lyrics from “Sweet Heaven When I Die” into a verse.
I had the great pleasure of exploring Virginia’s Crooked Road music heritage trail over the weekend with Andrew Cothern (RVA Playlist, RVA News, Virginia Tourism) and Doug Nunnally (Sound Gaze, RVA Magazine). There are a zillion sights and sounds I’d like to share, and I’ll be putting together a bigger piece of writing describing the many reasons why a trip out to the Crooked Road is worth your while, but I thought I’d start by making Orthophonic Joy this week’s CD Monday.
